Trevor Rabin Jacaranda

Trevor Rabin Jacaranda

Then: I, like many other YesFans became of aware of Trevor Rabin back when the hit album 90125 came out. Read the name in the credits. When the tour came I checked it out. Yes was now a band with a new focus. They had a hit song with Owner Of A Lonely Heart, and the album was making the charts. All seemly guided by a very competent new guitarist. Not only did he play guitar, but other instruments as well. An all arou...nd multi-instrumentalist. Add to that, songwriter. He says Owner Of A Lonely Heart came to him while sitting on the toilet. Plus he sings. All this he does very well. A talented musician and performer.

Trevor stayed with Yes appearing on three other studio releases; Big Generator, Union, and Talk. At the end of the Talk tour, Mr. Rabin resigned from the band to focus on becoming a movie score composer. I always personally loved the medium myself. I grew up admiring the composing skills of John Williams. Another 20th century Beethoven. His scores equated to some of the best classic pieces even written. Typically performed with a symphony.

Not to be confused with songs that appear in movies. A song in a movie would later on appear on the film's soundtrack. Keep in mind, a soundtrack is not a score. A score is typically original music composed and performed just for the film. Could also include dialogue or sound effects from the movie. Think Vangelis - Blade Runner.

When you think of the film Jaws (original score by John Williams), the music you hear in your head is likely to be the main theme which was composed by Williams. The music was meant to envision a shark attacking. A short and very effective instrumental.

An example of a song in a movie that would appear on a follow up soundtrack could be; Aerosmith's - I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing. Was in the 1998 disaster film; Armageddon. Was a big hit for the band. Appeared in the actual movie during some mushy love scene.

The score, or the original instrumental music heard in the background of the film Armageddon, was composed by Trevor Rabin. His first real BIG hit in films. So being a fan of both Aerosmith and Rabin's, I ended up purchasing both the soundtrack, and the score from the film.

After a while the scores were becoming hard to find, or were too highly priced to keep up getting them all. I do have a small collection anyway of his film work.

Here's a sample of titles that Trevor did the music for:

The Glimmer Man (1996)
Con Air (1997) ...with Mark Mancina...before that Trevor also helped Mark with his score to the film, Twister (1996).
Armageddon (1998)
Jack Frost (1998) ...does a cameo as Trevor, The Jack Frost Band Lead Guitarist.
Deep Blue Sea (1999)
Gone In 60 Seconds (2000)
Remember The Titans (2000)
The 6th Day (2000)...does commentary on the DVD
Rock Star (2001)
Exorcist: The Beginning (2004)
National Treasure (2004)
Flyboys (2006)
Snakes On A Plane (2006)
National Treasure: Book Of Secrets (2007)
Get Smart (2008)
I Am Number 4 (2011)

Add to this, his guest appearances over the years; Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Manfred Mann, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Seal, Paul Rodgers, Rick Wakeman, and Roger Hodgson just to name a few. And by the way, all this is NOT everything Trevor has ever done. The information I listed, just an attempt to answer the question as to who Trevor Rabin is. People ask me this. So there in a nutshell, is my answer. Trevor has an official website. Additional information can be found there. I recommend bookmarking / keeping up. A player in the world of classic rock. Someone whose CD's I automatically purchase based on past performances. My opinion is he helped resurrect the band Yes. Without his help, the relaunch of the group would have never happened, or been anywhere as successful. Worked out well for both. Yes needed the new blood, and Rabin needed a place he could shine.

Now: In May of this year, Trevor released what would be his fifth solo record; Jacaranda. To compare it to previous solo efforts would not be fair. Trevor's matured as an musician. Not so he's boring anyone to death. He's been at this game for a few decades now. The man's progressed. Kind of funny since he's made a name for himself doing progressive pop type songs. Where some of our greats remain the same, Trevor's taken his playing, and composing to a whole other level. In my past columns I made mention of Twenty Century Beethoven's. Twenty First Century now. Here's old school showing itself. Musicians whom I would consider among the ranks of the great classical composers of yesterday. Two Hundred years from now I bet a symphony orchestra on another planet performs the music of this man.

Jacaranda: An almost all instrumental that covers a wide range of different musical styles. Worth every penny I paid for it. When's the last time you could say that about a CD you purchased?

I knew I'd be writing this review on here. It's impossible to comment about anything intelligently unless you know at least a little something about the subject matter. So I listened to this CD at least twenty times within the past few days. In the process, I gotten to know it real well. I love instrumentals. I like when things are changed up some. Which could explain my getting into progressive rock as much as I do. I wrote a few notes alongside song titles. So to cut the suspense, I'll tell you ahead of time I like Rabin's Jacaranda very much. Here's some of why.

Spider Boogie -- Quick picking fun jam. Market Street -- Final Eyes 2. At times a similar tone or rhythm that reminded me of. Anerley Road -- Old style start -- dream like jazz style -- a solid song.
Through The Tunnel: Ball's to the wall moments. The Branch Office -- nice melody. Rescue: Very Mike Oldfield like. In a way too beautiful for words. Killanney 1 & 2 -- Piano playing that rivals Vangelis or Wakeman. Storks Bill Geranium Waltz -- like a song heard and applauded 300 years ago. Me And My Boy -- it's a rocker !! Multi-layered & very cool. Freethought -- feelin' happy. Zoo Lake -- lazy feeling in an old fashion kind of way. Gazania -- happy ending.

Trevor plays almost just about everything you hear on this CD. It's simply incredible. He's a magnificent player in every sense of the word. Classic rock fans take note. Two current players accompanying Jeff Beck lately are found on here; Vinnie Colaiuta, and Tal Wilkenfeld. Trevor in the liner notes remarks how happy he was with their appearance on here. Good job producing. They can be heard, and enjoyed.

If the song titles sound or read a little strange, it's due to this CD being autobiographical. In the liner notes on each song Trevor makes comments with a lot of them being stories of his growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa. Uncle G's favorite one is from a song called; Zoo Lake. It reads in part: When I was around 17, we use to go out on a rowing for 20 cents an hour and smoke some pot. Hard place to be stopped in the middle of the lake".

For the classic rocker whose looking to branch out some. For everyone else who likes good music. Hopefully it won't be so long between solos for us to get the next one. A fantasy concert would be Trevor doing music from Yes and his films. I'd like to see that, and maybe for one night Trevor conducting the Boston Pops Orchestras. I love to hear them do Endless Dream.

Uncle G's CD Rating: From one to five stars...Trevor Rabin's Jacaranda: 5 stars !!

Former Fleetwood Mac Guitarist Jeremy Spencer Releases New Album "Bend In The Road"

New CD From Original Fleetwood Mac Guitarist Jeremy Spencer To Be Released Worldwide On August 28, 2012

July 24, 2012 - San Francisco, CA - On April 21st, legendary guitarist Jeremy Spencer, an original member of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and featured artist on Propelz, released a limited edition double vinyl album titled 'Bend In The Road' for International Record Store Day. The release packs a “vintage vibe” by way of Jeremy’s handmade touch, fusing his artistry as a consummate slide guitarist, singer/songwriter, interpreter, and illustrator. His evocative watercolor graces the timeless gatefold cover, recalling enduring albums when records were the sum of their parts and made with consequence. Within is an equally crafted collection of songs coming from the deepest core of his heart. He sounds as authentically tasty and fiery as ever, displaying a far wider guitar palette, insight, and conviction that have continued to evolve since his long absence from the public eye. On August 28, 2012 Jeremy Spencer's 'Bend In The Road' will be released on CD worldwide with a new package design.

In Fleetwood Mac, Jeremy shared the spotlight with reticent star-super nova Peter Green, embodying Elmore James riffs and vocals obsessively and uncannily. He possessed an equal fervor and absolute command of quintessential early rock and roll, personifying personal hero Buddy Holly and his ilk spot on. On 'Bend In The Road,' the Elmore and Buddy influences and impeccable blues and rock rendering remain intact and vibrant, while also present is a new collaborative nature. He selflessly trades guitar licks and support with Brett Lucas (the young Detroit guitarist and aficionado who co-produced the album and whose band augments the proceedings) in the way Green and Kirwan shared on the iconic "Albatross", the torching "Like It This Way" and the introspective "World In Harmony". On the album’s elegant "Merciful Sea", producer Brett managed to persuade Jeremy to reveal his hereto unsung, intimate, and affecting piano playing for all to marvel. Throughout the full 32 tracks recorded at this time, one can hear an expansive range of influences from Django to Marty Robbins. Jeremy plays effortlessly while seamlessly incorporating these influences and making them his own, as natural and easy of a fit as that of his beloved ceramic slides.

This record is a career culmination of technique meeting soul that has a transcendent, “Layla-esque,” quality. With its escalating and emotive sequence of songs, which are spiritually driven and invested (recalling LPs of yore, but without sounding dated), the album instead sounds intoxicatingly assured, relaxed, and out of the blue resonant.

The Special Limited 2-LP Gatefold Edition released on Record Store Day, April 21st, 2012, contains 17 tracks, 4 of which are exclusive: Jambo, Strange Woman, The Sun is Shining, and Blind Lover (but without the song Homework, which only appears on the CD).

In 2006 Jeremy Spencer released his album 'Precious Little', which met with enthusiastic reviews and marked a new beginning for Jeremy after virtually disappearing from the music world for 33 years.

Press surrounding 'Bend In The Road' includes:

"I had chills up my spine listening to it tonight, and when I heard 'Aphrodite' the first time a few days ago, I was literally right back into 'Then Play On' territory...couldn't believe it...an instant classic right there." Rick Frystak, Amoeba Records

"Inside is a collection of songs that come from Spencer's love of the blues. It's an intimate journey but one that will connect profoundly and repeatedly with listeners." Clive Rawlings, Blues Matters

"An album I am sure will satisfy all good music lovers, from those who loved the original Fleetwood Mac, to the younger ones, who enjoy pop music, blues, rock, classical music, soul... So, if you like good music, this album is perfect for you." Vincent Zumel, La Hora del Blues

" 'Bend In The Road' flows with the ease of a master craftsman at the top of his game. His obvious skill and passion for what he does makes this disc impossible for me to remove from the player. It has simply mesmerized me." Monte Adkinson, Suncoast Blues Society

'Precious Little' left Blues aficionados eager for more… and now, six years later, Jeremy Spencer has put together a masterpiece with his new release, 'Bend in the Road'.

Bush: UK Tour Dates In August!

BUSH
Announce UK Dates – August 2012

Album “THE SEA OF MEMORIES” Out Now

Fresh off the back of their critically acclaimed return, BUSH are set to play shows in Glasgow, Manchester and London in August 2012

Latest single, “Baby Come Home”, taken from 2011’s album The Sea of Memories is available now, as well as both the limited edition and normal edition of the new album, released via Hamburg based record label earMUSIC. The album release was the first studio album from the band in over 10 years. It was released on CD and as a limited edition double CD. The double CD features 8 exclusive tracks picked personally by the band for Europe from their archive of unreleased remixes and live performances.

The British-born band has had more success over the course of their first half-dozen years than most artists do in a lifetime. From 1994’s Sixteen Stone to 2001’s Golden State, they made some of the most successful rock albums in recent memory, selling over 16 million albums to date worldwide.

“We are the sum of everything we’ve done – right, wrong and in-between,” says singer and guitarist Gavin Rossdale ironically. “We’re all victims, and benefactors, of our past.”

The Sea of Memories is drenched in Bush’s trademark intensity and driven by Rossdale’s emotive, bittersweet vocals, but it’s also infused with an immediacy that pushes the album into new, compelling directions. From their lead single, the atmospheric powerhouse “The Sound of Winter,” to the rapid-fire exuberance of “All My Life,” Bush reveals itself as a re-energized band. It’s a fresh mindset that’s at least partially influenced by events surrounding the making of this record.

The Sea of Memories is Bush’s first indie effort since the early 1990s. Rossdale’s own imprint, Zuma Rock Records, issued the album through an exclusive partnership with earMUSIC in Europe. “It’s been a relief and a breath of fresh air,” says Rossdale of making the leap from a major label, and being able to work under fewer creative constraints. “There’s a pressure that comes with being on a major. If you’re nurtured and looked after properly, it gives you the freedom and confidence to be creative, and from that comes good results. But it can also be disheartening. This feels good. This feels right.”

Disc One
1. The Mirror Of The Signs
2. The Sound of Winter
3. All My Life
4. The Afterlife
5. All Night Doctors
6. Baby Come Home
7. Red Light

9. I Believe in You
10. Stand Up

06. All Night Doctors (original version)

Heart Strange Euphoria Boxed Set Out Now!

Heart Strange Euphoria
Epic Records/Legacy

For many their affiliation with heart goes back to the eighties when the band were having massive worldwide success with tracks like These Dreams, alone and albums like the self-titled Heart album and bad Animals; this to those in the know is known as the “Hair Years”.  Heart as a band goes all the way back to the sixties and I was lucky enough to get into the band when their first album Dreamboat Annie came out in 1976. I first saw the band on a British TV show called Supersonic where they were performing the songs Magic man and Crazy On You. I was hooked
Fronted by the two Wilson Sisters Ann (Vocals) and Nancy (Guitar) they looked and sounded so different. I followed the band through the various albums and concerts until by the time of the self-titled Heart album in the mid-eighties I really was an old hand in terms of Heart
For those of us who go back far enough Strange Euphoria is the boxed set we always hoped the band would release. Across the four discs you get some amazing music much of it previously unreleased and a whole lotta info in the accompanying book. I say “Whole Lotta” with my tongue firmly in my cheek because the band really did model themselves musically on their heroes Led Zeppelin. Nothing wrong with that particularly as the band only took their influence from the band and made it their own.
In terms of content the three CDs and one DVD are a treasure trove of material and I was knocked out to hear the two demos of the two songs that first got me into the band (Magic Man and Crazy On You) and there is an amazing version of Barracuda from a BBC broadcast but there is something from all the relevant eras of the bands history so there will be something for everyone whenever the” heart attack” struck. So the eighties are also well represented.
The final disc is a DVD and it is a television performance from the band filmed for a small television company in 1976 right at the start of their success. The band put in a fantastic performance featuring songs from Dreamboat Annie and the quality is way better than the many bootlegs that I have seen in the past so another tick in the box as for reasons to buy Strange Euphoria
The band is currently on tour in America through until September so I urge you to visit their website and check out the dates. They are a quite magnificent band in the live arena and certainly a band well worth catching.
There will be an official biography from Ann and Nancy Wilson in the autumn and I am also hoping for a new album and a British tour maybe next year but in the meantime Strange Euphoria is the ultimate Heart “Fan” release. There has been a lot of time love and effort put into this boxed set and it shows. If only all boxed sets were fan oriented like this.

Help Find This Missing Big Country Guitar!

Eagle-eyed  rock lovers in Dunfermline, or where ever you may be as you never know where something can pop up ... please keep  your eyes peeled  for this missing guitar  (pictured above with Jamie on the left) which needs to be reunited pronto with Big Country's Jamie Watson. The  electro acoustic guitar, a Freshman Apollo 3 OC, was accidentally left in the back of a taxi on Sunday morning.

Jamie's mother  Sandra Watson  says

"They got a taxi outside the club (PJ's) at 1.35am and got the driver to wait while he picked up his guitar and an overnight bag from our house in Dunfermline. Because there were four of them they put the guitar in the boot of the taxi and then forgot all about it when they got there. ''

(The taxi had gone  on to an address in Oakley )

"He can't remember any details about the car, we've phoned round all the taxi companies we can think of and told the police but we've had no luck so far.  It's the only guitar he has up here - the rest are in London - but he absolutely loves it. It's a well played, well loved guitar"

Big Country are due to play A Taste of Hard Rock Calling in London on Thursday, a warm-up before headlining one of the stages at Hard Rock Calling on Sunday, also in Hyde Park

It is possible  that the guitar which has a serial number and is  in a black and grey soft-bodied case  could still be in the boot of this taxi  unknown to the driver, however it is sadly also possible that someone has  taken advantage of the  situation .

If you know where the guitar is or have any information about it please contact Dunfermline Police Station
