BIG COUNTRY’S BBC PERFORMANCES TO BE RELEASED ON NEW BOX SET

BIG COUNTRY’S BBC PERFORMANCES TO BE RELEASED ON NEW BOX SET

“We’d like to do something now, which is all about being proud of who you are and what you’re about. I think everyone should be that …” - Stuart Adamson, introducing The Seer - BBC In Concert.
Almost thirty-years to the day since Britain’s legendary rocker’s Big Country released their classic debut album ‘The nCrossing’, Universal Music are proud to present ‘At The BBC’, a comprehensive four-disc collection that brings together the band’s BBC radio & TV performances between 1982 and 1990.

A must for all Big Country fans, ‘At The BBC’ includes forty-eight audio tracks, with no fewer than thirty of these recordings previously unreleased. In addition, the set’s accompanying DVD contains a staggering thirty-nine previously unreleased performances, including the band’s appearances on Top of The Pops, The Old Grey Whistle Test and live sets from The Edinburgh Playhouse and the Hexagon in Reading, amongst numerous others. The DVD also includes footage of Big Country’s late lead-singer and guitarist Stuart Adamson being interviewed by Richard Jobson, the lead singer with Adamson’s previous band The Skids.

Former Big Country bassist Tony Butler said, "To see, after all these years, such a collection of recordings and great memories made by the BBC, kind of makes me feel we got there. I mean, it’s the BBC! How cool."

Big Country guitarist Bruce Watson added, “Watching the footage from Sefton Park in Liverpool brought back some fond memories. Loads of bodies covered in mud, very much a Woodstock atmosphere. Great days!”

The super-deluxe box set comes complete with a hardback book containing in-depth liner notes from respected journalist Tim Barr, archive photographs, a Big Country poster and postcards housed in a wallet.
There is also a 2CD version of the release which features selected audio highlights from the box set.
Big Country was originally formed in 1981 by guitar playing founder members Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson both native of the band’s hometown Dunfermline in Scotland. Initially driven by a shared vision of widescreen guitar melody, harmony and lyric, the classic Big Country sound was further enhanced later that summer by the arrival of

London-based rhythm section Mark Brzezicki and bassist Tony Butler. This is the Big Country that broke massively worldwide with the release of debut album The Crossing’s singles ‘Fields Of Fire’, ‘Chance’ and signature song ‘In A Big Country’, which went on to become massive worldwide hits, selling over 2 million copies and driving ‘The Crossing’ to 3 prestigious Grammy nominations in the USA.
The run of success continued throughout the 1980s with the release of the anthemic single ‘Wonderland’ and the
second album ‘Steeltown’ (1984), which debuted at Number 1 in the UK and contained the hit singles ‘East Of Eden, ‘Just a Shadow’ and ‘Where The Rose Is Sown’ . In 1985, Big Country appeared at Live Aid in London, followed byfurther successful album releases ‘The Seer’ (1986, which included the bands biggest UK hit ‘Look Away’, which also reached Number 1 in the Irish Singles chart) and ‘Peace In Our Time’ (1988), which saw the band playing the first ever privately promoted gig in Russia at the Moscow Sports Stadium.

In the 1990s Big Country would go on to release studio albums ‘No Place Like Home’ (1991), Buffalo Skinners (1993) and ‘Why The Long Face (1995) – landing the band the special guest slot on the Rolling Stones ‘Voodoo Lounge’ European tour and several shows in the UK and Ireland with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Robert Plant – before releasing ‘Driving To Damascus’ in 1999, the last album the band released before Stuart Adamson took his own life in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 16th 2001.

In 2010, Big Country reformed, with the band’s friend Mike Peters from The Alarm on vocals. Following three sell-out UK tours and a run of acclaimed festival appearances bassist Tony Butler retired from the band, to be replaced by former Simple Minds bassist Derek Forbes. In May 2013, Big Country released ‘The Journey’, their first studio album in fourteen years.

Big Country ‘At The BBC’ captures the classic line-up at the peak of their powers, further cementing the band’s reputation as truly great live band.

Mr Averell - Gridlock (Equally Tuned / Gonzo Multimedia 2013) Review

Classic Rock Radio Dot EU - New Music Review
Spotlight: Mr Averell - Gridlock (Equally Tuned / Gonzo Multimedia 2013)

I been spending the last part of the week getting to know Mr Averell. It's a AKA for Dutch visual sound artist René van Commenée. I'm actually focused on the second offering of Mr Averell's sound projects called Gridlock. Every time I play it over my stereo's speakers, I hear something that I had not noticed before. The artist's roots are in Avant Garde, but they also branch out into the more traditional areas such as rock. Still don't mistake this for a mainstream rock album. Closer to progressive rock if I had to label it. Lots more freedom for musical expression, which is what you find here.

The name Mr Averell is used by Rene' in order to record and release song-based recordings. He sees it as a band in which he is main writer and performer. As a listener to what Commenée creates I can say whatever it is he is doing, it works exceptionally well. The tracks, twelve unique cuts interwoven on Gridlock, are indeed worth investigating.
Joining Rene' on Gridlock are the following; Mike Garson (D. Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins), Lene Lovich, David Jackson (VDGG, P. Gabriel), John Ellis (The Vibrators, The Stranglers, P. Gabriel, P. Hammill), Judge Smith (VDGG), Hugh Banton (VDGG), Stuart Gordon (P. Hammill, P. Gabriel, Massive Attack), Ninca Leece, Willem Tanke, Martijn Alsters, Tammo Heikens, Dyane Donck (Daisy Bell), and Lisa Weiss. Each do a wonderful job of complimenting Mr. Commenée's performance.
My first impression of Mr Averell's Gridlock was it played, each track, like a theatrical play. One where its acts are uplifting or sorrowful. In the music, I hear influences such as The B-52's, with hints of early Blondie, or Springsteen. The vocals are distinct. The recording itself contains sounds that can be annoying yet fit the presentation. Together I find it a unique listening experience that stays in the mind long after the disc has stopped playing.

I mentioned vocals. They are somewhat uncommon, in which I conclude the voice is yet another instrument which to create melody, yet stand separate, such as on the long carried note on "Rideehoo!!" Located at the very end of the composition. Turn the volume way up to appreciate. Like a Beatles hidden sound bite you finally notice after hearing whatever song with a pair of good headphones on. Then I immediately recommend turning the volume down again, or else be overwhelmed with a wall of sound next time played.

Track one, the introduction sound recording called "Lock" is forty one seconds of something that at first one may wish to dismiss, but I haven't yet. Then it's followed up by a song that I recommend getting rid of all mirrors beyond reach before listening to. For the power of suggestion is very strong. From that track, solid entertainment till the last note in which I already mentioned and spoke highly of. For reasons mainly because it snapped me to attention. Words that caught my imagination while getting my approval. Over all very likeable, and something that will grow on you with every listen.
Rating: Using the one to five star rating system, I give Mr Averell's Gridlock five stars. I appreciate its originality. A collection of music that's meant to be heard and played from start to finish. Not a chore by any means. A CD that I'm glad to add to my collection and one that I guarantee will get played time and time again. A solid production. When one is seeking to get away from the typical mainstream sound, and feeling a tad musically adventurous, I'd recommend driving full speed ahead in this direction. So to get voluntary stuck...in the Gridlock.

Kink's Legend Dave Davies To Release New Album 'I Will Be Me' – June 4, 2013

Kink's Legend Dave Davies To Release New Album 'I Will Be Me' – June 4, 2013

Los Angeles, CA - The man who forever changed the sound of rock 'n' roll when he invented distortion, Kink's legend Dave Davies, has recorded a brand new solo album of all original material! To be released on Cleopatra Records on June 4th , 'I Will Be Me' features guest appearances by The Jayhawks, Anti-Flag, award winning UK blues guitarist Oli Brown, Chris Spedding, US stoner rock band Dead Meadow, Aussie rockers The Art, Geri X and others! In support of Dave's new album release, a special engagement of Live performances in New York and Los Angeles are scheduled for the end of May to mid-June! (see below for complete list of shows)

Dave Davies founded the Kinks in the early 1960s and forever changed music after he sliced up the speaker cone of a little green amp and created a revolutionary, distorted guitar tone and frenetic solo on the song "You Really Got Me". Musicologist Joe Harrington described the Kinks influence: " 'You Really Got Me', 'All Day And All Of The Night' ... were predecessors of the whole three-chord genre ... The Kinks did a lot to help turn rock n roll into rock." In 1998, writer Bill Crowley wrote, "As lead guitarist and founder of The Kinks, Dave Davies is one of the most unpredictable and original forces in rock, without whom guitar-rock styles including heavy metal and punk would have been inconceivable. A member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Dave's massive guitar sounds have inspired bands from Van Halen to Green Day."

Dave's new album 'I Will Be Me' is a return to his groundbreaking guitar sound and innovative songwriting. His classically English voice shows off a new depth but still hits his famous high notes in this collection. The hard rocking track "Livin' In The Past", takes a look at obsession with all things retro but, ever the Mod, Dave surprises with the lyric, "No matter what they do or say, the future's here to stay!" He takes a look back with "Little Green Amp", a playful, punk homage to days when his jagged, blues driven sound wave ripped ahead of the British Invasion through stereos the world over. "Cote du Rhone (I Will Be Me)", an uncensored look at ugliness in the world today, is as angry and biting as any song in Dave's repertoire with an innovative yet heavy slide guitar tone. Soothing lyrics and sounds of Jonathan Lea's sitar playing on "Healing Boy" show Dave's sensitive side. In a recent radio interview he said, "Rock music is a positive force for good." This hopeful and optimistic vision manifests and bridges themes personal, social and universal in 'I Will Be Me'.

Since the early days, Dave Davies has worked on a slew of critically acclaimed records, ranging from solo hit single "Death of a Clown", to experimental Kinks records like 'Village Green Preservation Society' and 'Arthur' as well as the classic single "Lola" in the '70s. In the '80s Dave released experimentally prescient solo work like the eponymous album titled 'Dave Davies' or 'AFL1-3603' named after himself and/or the barcode symbol face cover art. His mainstream success continued in the 80s on hit Kinks albums 'Low Budget' and 'State of Confusion'. In the '90s he released more solo work such as 'Bug' and the compilation 'Unfinished Business'.

His songs have been featured in films by John Carpenter and on TV shows like 'The Sopranos', which used his tune "Living On A Thin Line". His tell-all autobiographical book 'Kink' was well received in the late '90s as well. In recent years, Dave has collaborated creatively with his sons. In 2010 he worked with son Russell Davies to create the hauntingly, beautiful rock electronica album, the Aschere Project. The film 'Mystical Journey', directed by son Martin Davies, narrates Dave's longtime interest in the paranormal, Eastern philosophies and spirituality (the film inspired Julien Temple s BBC documentary 'Kinkdom Kome'). No matter how diverse the ambition, Dave Davies puts his heart and soul in all of his projects.

Ian Anderson says So - bugger me, but it’s back to the Albert for a recreation of the 1972 performance. If only Victoria could be there too. She might have rather liked it. In a funny sort of way. I might try to get a few guests in too if they are not washing their hair. But I will have shampoo at the ready and a hot Fray Bentos pie at backstage catering. That might do it. At least I get to sleep in my own bed afterwards.

Hope to see you there. Bostock rools.  Kiss, kiss."

The ‘Thick as a Brick’ show is a two part Prog bonanza where Anderson and his band will be performing his Jethro Tull’ 1972 classic in its entirety, followed by recent material from its 2012’ sequel. Both albums will be performed as recorded, seamless 55 minutes long tracks with a 20 minute intermission.  Video projections and theatrical elements will offer a sumptuous background for this unforgettable milestone in the history of rock.

‘Thick as a Brick’ was a concept album based on a poem written by fictitious 10 year old boy Gerald Bostock, behind which hides Anderson himself. ‘Thick as a Brick 2’ was written and released by Anderson as a celebration of the original’s 40th anniversary, and examines the possible different paths that the precocious young schoolboy might have taken later in life; alter-ego characters are used to illustrate the infinite potential twists and turns of fate and opportunity.

Anderson has been leading Jethro Tull for 44 years; they toured 54 countries worldwide and recorded 30 studio albums, selling over 60 million albums in their career. Widely recognised as the man who introduced the flute to rock music, Ian also plays ethnic flutes and whistles together with acoustic guitar and the mandolin family of instruments, providing the acoustic textures which have been an integral part of most of the Tull repertoire and his solo material. In his most recent solo concerts, Ian has been accompanied by orchestras, string quartets and featured soloists; his eclectic acoustic shows are also a hit with fans of the genre.

Classic Rock Radio Dot EU – New Music Review Spotlight: Tim Morse – Faithscience

Classic Rock Radio Dot EU – New Music Review
Spotlight: Tim Morse – Faithscience

I recently came across a new CD by Tim Morse. His name sounded familiar. In my library is a book Tim put together on the prog rock giants, Yes, written a little over ten years ago. I enjoyed the read so much that I remembered Tim’s name. Still I didn’t put two and two together immediately. The last name is, after all, common. Cracking open the disc and looking at the inside credits, I see at the top of a list giving thanks, a name I know all too well: Jon Anderson. Cool…two and two is indeed four. Same guy. I knew he was an author. Music- wise regarding Mr. Morse, I was clueless up to the point when I put Faithsciece in my CD player and pressed play.

Ends up besides being an author, that Tim Morse is a competent songwriter, vocalist, and a multi-instrumentalist. In the credits on Faithscience it reads; "Tim Morse -- keyboards, lead and backing vocals, all 12 string and six string nylon / steel string acoustic guitars, occasional bass, percussion and electric guitar." How impressive is that? Now that I heard Faithscience repeatedly, I can say that he plays all of them with proficiency. One example would be an instrument that defines prog rock, the keyboards. One listen to Faithscience and one can conclude Mr. Morse's playing skills would qualify him to be a wizard.
Tim’s resume also includes being a part of a very popular Yes tribute band called Parallels. Add to that, he put out his debut CD a few years back, which was very well received named Transformation (2005).
Faithscience starts off with one of the most infectious songs on the disc, Descent. From there it segments into the beginning of the second track, a tune called Voyager. This song almost immediately starts off with Tim’s first vocal appearance on the disc. I’m so hard on vocalists. No gray area with me. One is either good or not. Tim has a pleasant voice. I like his delivery. And away you go. After putting the CD on and before I even realized it, track four is starting to play. Give or take about twenty minutes, or a third of the CD has just flown by. A pleasurable listening experience saturated with a mixture of sounds reminding me at various times of Gerry Rafferty, Steely Dan, or The Flower Kings. By the time the CD is done, I've heard songs in the same vain as Genesis and keyboard playing very much in the ballpark of a Keith Emerson or a Rick Wakeman.

Track four is a stand out, lovely guitar piece reminiscent to one of the masters - Steve Howe. Very nicely done.

The centerpiece is a new prog masterpiece entitled, The Last Wave. Blows me away. Samples from metal prog to some cool rock prog jazz fusion. Containing wild tempo changes and various musical styles. The song is worthy of being a new musical business card for Mr. Morse. Well done indeed !!
Every song contained has something unique to it. Ends with a beautiful song that if you didn’t tell me, I would have thought it was something new by Vangelis (who is essentially retired). Older females might call this pretty music. The mellower ending helps balance out the disc. Good choice for a closing track.
Rating: On a scale of one to five stars, Uncle G gives Tim Morse’s Faithscience, five stars. It does its job, which when I’m reviewing something, is to entertain me. So much so I’m thinking I need to buy Tim’s first CD. I don’t want a missed opportunity on yet another masterpiece from a contemporary new prog artist. Time to backtrack some. And in the meantime I’m sure Faithscience will remain close to my stereo. Nicely produced and engineered with a clarity that enables the listener to zoom in on whatever instrument(s) is being presented. With Tim & Company, lots of good playing here to focus on.

Classic Rock Radio Dot EU Movie Review Spotlight: Star Trek: Into Darkness (Paramount 2013)

Classic Rock Radio Dot EU Movie Review
Spotlight: Star Trek: Into Darkness (Paramount 2013)

Star Trek Into Darkness makes the twelve Star Trek film since the first one came out in the year 1979. A franchise that since the original television show, also spawned four spin-off programs; Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and the short lived Enterprise.

Star Trek Into Darkness is the second Star Trek film that was directed by JJ Abrams. I must admit that I went kicking and screaming to his last one. Two reasons:

01.) I HATE remakes.

02.) My devotion to the original actors.

To recast such iconic roles, was a heavy undertaking. Both casting and it's film was a MAJOR success. I personally liked it enough to where I was comfortable with the final product. There will always be a place in my heart for the original series and those involved. JJ Abrams opened new doors, and presented new possibilities. A brilliant re-imaging / execution. So much so that I looked forward to seeing it's sequel, in which I did yesterday. The first showing on the first day it hit theaters.

The new film and it's storyline, pick up where the last one left off. Still, it's not really necessary to have ever seen a Star Trek anything to enjoy this motion picture. And speaking of enjoy, I would recommend paying the extra few bucks and seeing it in 3D. The visuals and effects totally kick ass. I asked myself before seeing the movie, how cool it would be to see Star Trek in 3D. I never did before. Am so glad I did. For this isn't the hooky 3D effects where the only items you see in three dimension, are when sticks and such are extended to the audience. That's your Daddy's 3D when he was a youngin'. With Star Trek Into Darkness, the whole picture screen is transformed into a window for us the audience to peer into. The best 3D I ever seen in a motion picture. Has a natural look, and feel to it. Almost like you're a fly on the wall. Effects provided by Industrial Light & Magic. For those aware of their work...there you have it.

Sitting here typing this out, I can't for the life of me think of one thing is which I had an issue with so to throw some criticism around. Not one item. My conclusion is all involved in the making did a superior job. From the writers, to the carpenters making the sets, to the actors, to the films director, JJ Abrams. A shame when the Oscars come around that films like this is largely ignored in favor of artsy fartsy Sean Penn like films. Unlike the ones who vote for the prestigious honor (yawn), I cast my pick by buying the tickets to movies that entertain me. Like this one as a matter of fact. And in all seriousness, I predict repeated views by fans who enjoyed the viewing experience as much a pleasure such as I did. I'm even thinking of going back to the theater, and observing it again. Of course in 3D. Just to see if I missed anything, or even just experience the beauty of the film again. This by the way is a super rarity for me to even contemplate, let along do.

Story: I don't want to out and out spoil those who are thinking about going to see this themselves. I will pass on that along with the cast from the re-launching of the franchise, that there are very good performances from those actors assisting; Peter Weller (Robo Cop), Benedict Cumberbatch, and actress Alice Eve.

Rating: Using the movie rating system of one to ten stars, Uncle G gives Star Trek Into Darkness; 10 stars !!! Bravo !!! Better than I ever hoped for.

Xenatopia, when heavy metal gets a Symbolic polishing.

As musical genres go 'Prog' has been a round for a long time you can trace it's roots back into classical music and the work of the avantgarde composers, that metal bands would embrace it sooner or later was in my eyes a logical step . Now as we know 'Metal Rock' is a music which we most expect to share with between one and four hundred close friends in a club or maybe several thousands out at a festival, however Symbolic have recorded a new album "Xenatopia" that you might want to experience first at home over a glass or two of something refreshing because it is much more thought provoking than your average metal offering. While still giving out the fast paced heavy rhythms guaranteed to get your heart rate up, the band employ the cunning device of including acoustically biased songs that allow time to get your breath back before racing off again down the metal road. It is a 'concept' album which tells a story that would fit seamlessly into one of Vin Diesels 'Riddick' type cinematic offerings,a totalitarian regime kidnapping and brainwashing citizens, subverting their will and the victims attempts to escape. This is the second Prog metal concept album I have experienced in a matter of months previously I was at Nightwish's master work Imaginarium and I have to say Xenatopia stands up well by comparison it is similarly multilayered, very well constructed and played by a band tighter than dozen groupies in a Mini Cooper. The first track starts in a strangely orchestral way until the drummer hammers a path through - now we are running Metal with a big 'M' with heavy as lead bass riffs , it is Tom Wallace on drums with drive and power right at the peak of his game , likewise the heavy over driven guitar of Steve Ray Potts and thumping bass of Robert Fernadez create that create a classic metal vibe . Singer Scott Bruce with more than power enough to live with the metal barrages is given the story tellers role with the lyrics which he discharges like he was born to do it . You hear many elements in the album common to the old school metal bands so the whole album will be familiar territory to those who grew up to a soundtrack of Sabbath,Metallica,Def Leppard etc and it should please all those hardcore metallers. Don't imagine we are talking the excesses of conceptual Prog with fifteen minute solos this is a full on integrated band experience with the musicians bouncing themes off each other and occasional short solos to season the pie it is a very polished metal album. I say you should take the opportunity to dip into this album it is that bit different to mainstream metal offerings more challenging more involving than standalone songs. It would also make a very fine lesson for young bands that it is not necessary for everybody to play as loud as possible to drown out the singer (unless of course he is really bad). Symbolic are based around San Diego, California and can be seen gigging in that area. They came together in 2009 to play their own uncompromising Prog against the mainsteam of the genre and to date have produced four albums two of which have been concepts, the fourth is of course Xenotopia and is a continuing step in the process of pushing against boundaries, it has spawned a single 'Taken' which is receiving FM airplay on US stations a vindication of the work the band pioneers . Since we embarked on this review drummer Tom Wallace has parted from Symbolic to pursue a separate project with "The Dolan Brotherhood" the percussion duties having now been placed in the very capable hands of Diana J Cameron who joins the ever increasing number of Lady Metal Percussionists Symbolic's Facebook page is at https://www.facebook.com/Symbolic4?ref=ts&fref=ts

An anthem the band hasn’t performed live for quite a long time.

Besides that „Live In Wacken“ offers exclusive bonus tracks. Live versions of the songs „Bells Of Freedom“, „Let Me Be Your Water“ and „Black Night“ from the acclaimed rock opera „The Räuber“ (previously unreleased on CD), the exclusive studio track „Thank You“ and an exciting new version of the ballad „Hold Me Now“ from the last BONFIRE‐studio album „Branded“.

„Live In Wacken“ has been mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Yngwie Malmsteen, Rob Halford, Queensryche) and will be released on the 31st of May 2013 on LZ Records/Sony Music.

Track list: 1. Intro/Wake Up (Live), 2. Never Mind (Live), 3. Sweet Obsession (Live), 4. In Zaire (Live), 5. The Stroke (Live), 6. Sword And Stone (Live), 7. SDI (Live), 8. Drum Solo (Live), 9.
