NASHVILLE PUSSY
***Raw Southern US Hard Rockers’ Balls Out ‘Up The Dosage’ New Studio Album released January 20th On Steamhammer / SPV*** Blaine Cartwright - guitars, vocals Ruyter Suys - guitars Bonnie Buitrago - bass Jeremy Thompson - drums ‘Up The Dosage’ picks up from where 2009’s ‘From Hell To Texas’ left off and goes even further than its predecessor, which was rated 9/10 in Powerplay by writer Glenn Butler, who raved that ‘This is the band’s crowning glory and should not be missed…it is Nashville Pussy encapsulated: rockin’, earthy and raw, but with real heart and soul’. ‘Up The Dosage’, packed with 13 gritty, deep fried and dirty Southern rock songs, all shot through with the band’s hilarious sense of humour, will be released as a standard jewel case CD, as a Digipak CD containing two bonus tracks + poster, plus as a double coloured vinyl gatefold sleeved album + CD, and download. ‘Up The Dosage’ was produced by Nashville Pussy and sound engineer Brian Pulito at the Microsonic Studios in Lexington, Kentucky, a place where the band, despite their limited budget, found ideal conditions for a focused and inspired recording process. “It was clear from the beginning that the album would have to be cut with very little money because the ZZ Top tour cost us lots of dollars,” Cartwright confesses, carrying on; “Luckily, Shinedown producer Rick Beato is a close friend of Nashville Pussy. Rick was so enthusiastic about the new material that he spontaneously decided to remix the album for us. That’s why ‘Up The Dosage’ sounds so contemporary and powerful, with phat guitars and a production which sounds brilliant in every respect.” Supersuckers’ bassist Eddie Spaghetti, who has been one of Cartwright’s best pals since the bands’ joint European tour in Spring 2009, also helped with the compositions; “Eddie came to my home in Atlanta to work on the material with me. He co-authored three songs and helped me with the right arrangements on the rest of the tracks. I can’t thank him enough for his assistance.” ‘Up The Dosage’ contains numerous typical Nashville Pussy-style gloriously rousing hard rocking songs such as album opener ‘Everybody’s Fault But Mine’, ‘Spent’, and the title track itself, but it also sports a few eyebrow raising surprises. ‘Hooray For Cocaine, Hooray For Tennessee’ is a country rock song which features dobro and mandolin, while ‘Till The Meat Falls Off The Bone’ is a 70’s hard rock inspired song, about which Cartwright states that “Somehow it’s turned into a kind of Aerosmith-meets-Pussy track. In the beginning I wasn’t sure whether we wanted to release it, but in a very special way it fits really well on the album.” ‘White And Loud’, penned by guitarist Ruyter Suys, sparkles with a doom laden Black Sabbath flair, whereas Cartwright’s personal fave ‘Rub It To Death’, is a raw number with unashamed Motörhead references. Nashville Pussy were formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996. Their unique blend of southern metal, boogie rock and psychobilly and songs about sex, drugs, drinking, fighting and rock ‘ n’ roll soon won a huge cult following in America. “We were tired of seeing and hearing bands that were just going through rock’s 101 motions, all slick but with no real soul. So we decided to play the kind of music that we would like to hear,” comments co-founder Ruyter Suys on the birth of the band. Their debut album, ‘Let Them Eat Pussy’, released in 1998, spawned a 1999 ‘Best Metal Performance’ Grammy for the single ‘Fried Chicken and Coffee’. Ever since, Nashville Pussy, one of the hardest working bands on the planet, have embarked on strenuous annual gig marathons, touring with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Reverend Horton Heat or ZZ Top, and starring at major festivals such as Wacken Open Air, as well as headlining in their own right. The group’s ‘High As Hell’ (2000), ‘Say Something Nasty’ (2002) and ‘Get Some’ (2005), studio albums all caused an international stir, followed by rave reviews of 2009’s ‘From Hell To Texas’. | |
