THE VELVET UNDERGROUND’S ‘WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT’ TURNS 45!
THREE-DISC SUPER DELUXE EDITION OUT DECEMBER 2nd

Featuring Rare Outtakes, Unreleased Studio Tracks And Live Material

"No one listened to it. But there it is, forever – the quintessence of articulated punk. And no one goes near it." - Lou Reed, August 2013

The Velvet Underground’s White Light/White Heat is one of the most confrontational and inspirational second albums ever made by a rock band. Recorded in a matter of days at the end of the summer of 1967, a season in which everything seemed possible in rock and much of it happened at now-mythic speed, White Light/White Heat is an album that reeks of gritty NY street life and which could only have been made in New York, by one band. And that group is the classic-quartet lineup of The Velvet Underground – singer-guitarist Lou Reed; bassist-organist and viola player John Cale; guitarist-bassist Sterling Morrison; and drummer Maureen Tucker.

“Cited by nearly every group in punk's long lineage and by more than a few arty types, the Velvets defined New York rock, poised between street-level grit and literary irony, rock simplicity and minimalistic drones, clarity and noise.”The New York Times

On December 2nd, 2013, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will release The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition, a three-disc, 30-track set featuring both the original stereo and mono releases, completely remastered, with bonus tracks including alternate versions, unreleased outtakes, John Cale's last studio sessions with the band, and the official release of their show at The Gymnasium in New York recorded on April 30, 1967, which includes five previously unreleased performances culled from John Cale’s personal copy.  The 45th anniversary set was developed in conjunction with Lou Reed and John Cale, the exclusive material is as follows:

*New 2013 mixes of “Guess I’m Falling In Love,” “Hey Mr. Rain (version one), “Hey Mr. Rain (version two), “Beginning To See The Light” (also a previously unreleased early version)
*Unreleased versions of “The Gift” (vocal version) and “The Gift” (instrumental version)
*Never-before-heard tracks from Live At The Gymnasium, New York City, April 30, 1967– “I’m Not A Young Man Anymore,” “I’m Waiting For The Man,” “Run Run Run,” “Sister Ray,” and “The Gift”
*New liner notes from David Fricke

Originally released by Verve Records on January 30, 1968, the LP cracked Billboard's Top 200 albums chart on March 16, entering at No. 199. Forty-five years later, The Velvet Underground’s White Light/White Heat is considered one of the most influential albums of all time, laying down the blue print for punk and experimental rock, critically acclaimed and included on many “Top Lists” including Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time and on Rolling Stone’s Greatest Artists List.

Disc one of The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition starts with the original six-song stereo version of White Light/White Heat, with the album’s title track plunging head first into 40 minutes of unprecedented, transgressive rock storytelling, propelled by epic distortion, lacerating guitar drone and severe, rhythmic purism – "the Statue of Liberty of punk," Lou Reed contends, "with the light on top. It's beyond unique and wonderful. No other group can touch what that is. You can't try to be that."

Other tracks include the airy yearning of "Here She Comes Now," one of the Velvets' finest ballads which gives the listener a two-minute breather with its “almost” serene beauty before being launched back in; the upbeat, hard-hitting proto-punk track "I Heard Her Call My Name,” punctuated with Reed’s biting guitar soloing, intertwined with a wall of distortion and feedback; the experimental sung and spoken noir of "Lady Godiva's Operation" and "The Gift”; climaxing with the propulsive, distorted eternity of sexual candour and twilight drug life, rendered dry and real in Reed's lethal monotone, in the 17-minute-plus "Sister Ray."  Bonus tracks include an alternate take of “I Heard Her Call My Name”;  the instrumental version of “Guess I’m Falling In Love,” recorded during the White Light/White Heat sessions but left unfinished; plus the original mixes of tracks “Temptation Inside Your Head” and “Stephanie Says”;  two different recordings of “Hey Mr. Rain”; and a previously unreleased early version of “Beginning To See The Light” recorded during John Cale’s last studio session with the Velvet Underground in May of 1968.

Disc two contains the original mono version of White Light/White Heat plus mono single mixes of “Here She Comes Now” and “White Light/White Heat,” as well as an instrumental and a vocal version of “The Gift,” both of which had been unreleased.

The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition also includes a third disc featuring the official release of the revelatory Gymnasium tape, recorded live during the Velvets' residency at a short-lived New York club in April 1967, five months before the White Light/White Heat sessions. This show was previously only available on bootlegs and includes the complete version of the instrumental “Booker T.,” plus the tracks “I’m Not A Young Man Anymore,” “I’m Waiting For The Man,” “Run Run Run” and a version of “Sister Ray” that clocks in just under 19 minutes.

Many have tried. Some have come close. More will try again, in the wake of this definitive reissue, The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition.

Initial pre-orders of the Super Deluxe Box Set on the Boxset Store will received a limited edition white flexi disc featuring “Booker T – Live at the Gymnasium NYC. Limited to availability whilst stocks last.  http://po.st/u7C94N

Look Wot I Dun
Don Powell: My Life in Slade
Lise Lyng Falkenberg & Don Powell

Look What I Dun is the story of Slade told through the eyes of drummer Don Powell whose life was shattered when, in 1973 at the height of the group’s fame, he was involved in a horrific car crash.

Unflinching in his honesty, Powell deals frankly with the aftermath of the accident that took the life of his girlfriend and left him with injuries that affect him to this day.

Leaders of the glam rock movement, Slade were the UK’s biggest singles band in the years 1971-74.

Their many hits have become rock’n’roll standards, not least ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’, arguably Britain’s all-time favourite Christmas song. For Don Powell, though, success came at a price.

Lucky to survive, the aftermath of his accident included alcoholism, financial woes and a life of reckless promiscuity.

Now sober and settled in Denmark with an adopted family of his own, Don Powell’s story – as told to Lise Lyng Falkenberg – is a no-nonsense journey to the heights and depths of the rock world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lise Lyng Falkenberg is a Danish author of mostly fiction and biographies. Since her debut in 1983 a dozen of her novels and biographies have been published in both Danish and English along with hundreds of short stories, poems, essays, articles and reviews.

Man On The Run Paul McCartney In The  70’s
Tom Doyle
Polygon Publishing

Ahh! I know what you are thinking….”Not another Paul McCartney book?”
Well yes, but this is a book with a difference. This book concentrates on the seventies a period that many Beatle fans think that Paul lost the plot with the formation of Wings and some slightly odd albums. Well the truth is Yes Paul did form Wings and a bloody fine band they were in all their various incarnations although apart from the Wingspan DVD and CD a few years ago the seventies are sometimes brushed over in favour of Paul’s Beatle years or the late eighties when he made his live re appearance and became a touring phenomenon.  Whilst Paul started the decade off as a solo artist quickly becoming a duo with Linda on the Ram album Wings grew out of Paul’s desire to get back to a “Group” rather than just be a solo performer as the other ex-Beatles had opted for bearing in mind that Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band was more a concept than a real band.

So having laid out his table with the title, Tom Doyle has chosen possibly one of the mist divisive periods of Paul’s career to focus on for a book. On the one hand there was much success both critically and commercially although some of the critical brickbats must still hurt when read in the cold light of day and throughout the seventies it seemed that every critic was measuring his success alongside the success of his previous band  a band that McCartney himself admitted was a “Tough act to follow”. Tom Doyle as not written a whitewash account of the period he has been honest and thorough in his research and for people like me who have read a great many Paul McCartney books over the years it is refreshing to go back over what I personally consider a quite exciting period in Paul McCartney’s career. In fact I will nail my colours firmly to the mast and admit my favourite period of Paul’s career was the period from Ram through to Wings Over America and of course as a teenager I would devour everything I could find on Wings even though unlike some fans I did remember the Beatles, I wasn't old enough to have seen them live so the first time I saw Paul in the flesh as it were was during the 1972 tour of Europe.

I have seen Paul every time he has toured since then but for me it will always be the early seventies and the early days of Wings. Tom Doyle goes into great detail concerning the members of the band and the band politics talking to most of the members of the band through its many incarnations. Whilst musically there is much to talk about there is  of course the high profile drugs busts which was pretty much par for the course for many musicians of the time although bagging a "Beatle" would have proved to be a bigger feather in the cap of certain Police Officers I am sure and Paul and Linda certainly seemed to be targeted due to his well-known comments and high profile advocating of marijuana . That aside what does come across is the fact that Wings despite many of the problems both brought to bear inside and outside the band always managed to deliver the goods  and while it seemed that it was sometimes one step forward two steps back the band’s batting average was pretty high

The book covers all the relevant line ups of Wings and all those involved and in actual fact Paul Linda and all the other members of Wings do come out of this really well. The background story, and let’s face it it is a big one is the then on-going story of Paul’s relationship with the other ex-Beatles throughout the seventies, all of it fascinating but not nearly as interesting to me  as the in group politics of Wings between 1971 and 1981.
For me it really is the story of Wings and again if I am honest I doubt anyone will write a better book on this period of Paul McCartney’s long career making this particular tome almost definitive if there ever could be such a thing. This book as I have said does cover possibly the most interesting part of Paul McCartney’s life as a musician he had everything to gain and really nothing to lose following the Beatles. True many more people will probably wait for the definitive Beatles story or life story, if it ever comes along that is but this book will certainly find a large and willing fan base who will love the contents.

The book includes some excellent photographs from the period many rarely seen before and as a whole I can highly recommend this to anyone with a passing interest in Paul McCartney’s life during the seventies. Paul certainly may have seemed a “Man On The Run” but in spite of all the odds the seventies actually turned out to be pretty good for Paul McCartney and reading this book you get a better idea of what has now become Paul McCartney’s “Middle Period” a period all too readily overlooked.

MONSTER MAGNET
Album: “Last Patrol”
Release Date: 21st October 2013

Monster Magnet are pleased to announce the release of their latest album ‘Last Patrol’ on Napalm Records due for release on the 21st October.

Considered one of the most creative, diverse, and hard-rocking of contemporary American bands, Monster Magnet is credited with pioneering “stoner rock”.  They’re noted for the uniqueness of their sound, their authenticity as a band, their ability to grow musically, and the intelligence and wit of their songs.

Fusing garage rock, progressive rock, heavy metal, punk and psychedelia – Last Patrol is Monster Magnet’s tenth studio album and a testament to everything they stand for.  In addition to musical influences, the band has always been inspired by comic book, science fiction, horror movies, and B-movies by filmmakers such as Roger Gorman and Russ Myer.

Last Patrol is a return to our roots in terms of vibe and recording style. It’s full-on psychedelic space-rock with a 60’s garage feel, recorded almost exclusively with vintage guitars, amps and effects in our hometown of Red Bank, NJ. The songs are a kind of Space-Noir, tales of cosmic revenge, peaking libidos, alienation and epic strangeness. It’s a weird trip through the back alleys of a dark, retro-future, which not by coincidence very much resembles my own life. (laughs) The lyrics aren’t fantasy really, rather a recounting of my musings on, observations of and general emotional reaction to my life and environment during a 1 week writing period in February of 2013. But I tend to use the vernacular and imagery of science fiction and surrealism to express myself and that’s where these lyrics get trippy. There's also our cover version of Donovan’s “Three Kingfishers” which I thought fit the mood of the album.” says singer Dave Wyndorf.

"A weird trip through the back alleys of a dark Retro-Future…"

The band will be playing live in February 2014:

13th Feb                                KOKO, London
14th Feb                                Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton

Punk Rock superhero and former Misfits guitarist DOYLE Wolfgang Von Frankenstein releases his brand new albumAbominator through his own label, Monsterman Records (in partnership with Brain Muscle Media), via Cargo Records. The album is available digitally at all major digital retailers, and will be available in CD and vinyl form in November 2013.

DOYLE's nuclear guitar riffs are mixed to melt speakers, while Alex Story's screaming vocals add to the sonic attack that is Abominator.

All of the tracks on Abominator are rife with horror imagery, while telling the tale of a sick and twisted love story.
