Neal Schon Releases New Solo Album: "The Calling"

Taking a detour from his main job as lead guitarist for Journey, the multi-talented Neal Schon has put the finishing touches on his latest solo album, The Calling - released by Frontiers Records in the UK on Monday 22nd October.  Produced by and featuring Schon on all guitars and bass, The Calling reunites Schon with former Journey bandmate, Steve Smith, who lends his virtuoso drum talents to all 12 tracks on the new album.  Schon set up shop at Berkeley’s famed Fantasy Studios during a break from Journey’s busy touring schedule and recorded the album, completely from scratch, in just four days. After overdubbing multiple guitar and bass parts, Schon recruited two keyboard masters to flesh out the music. Igor Len, an accomplished classical, jazz and film composer who had previously collaborated with Schon, is featured on acoustic piano throughout The Calling album.
GRAMMY Award-winning special guest Jan Hammer (Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miami Vice soundtrack) recorded Moog synthesizer solos on two tracks – Fifty Six and Tumbleweeds.  Recently, Schon teamed up with Dan Barnett (Journey: Live In Manila) to produce the video for the first single and title track from The Calling.
featuring special guests Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo and Loverboy.

12 ORIGINAL RECORDINGS CONTINUE A CONCEPTUAL NARRATIVE ARC STARTED ON VAI’S ACCLAIMED REAL ILLUSIONS:REFLECTIONS ALBUM

Virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer Steve Vai is set to release a new solo album of original material, on September  11th (in the UK) called ‘The Story Of Light’. The title comes out on Favored Nations Entertainment, the label Vai founded in 1999. Its sprawling and expressive 12 song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc begun on the artist’s acclaimed 2005 album Real Illusions: Reflections, Vai’s last studio album.

Although The Story of Light is largely instrumental, the album does feature guest vocalists, including singer songwriter Aimee Mann—dueting with Vai on “No More Amsterdam,” which she also cowrote—and Beverly McClellan, a season one finalist on The Voice (USA). McClellan appears on “John the Revelator,” a track inspired by a vintage recording of blues singer Blind Willie Johnson, whose acid soaked vocals are in the mix as well. Other highlights include the title track which opens the album, “Gravity!Storm,” “The Moon and I,” and “Velorum.”

Throughout, three time GRAMMY winner Vai’s lead guitar is as lyrically resonant as it is technically masterful, his licks and solos bending sounds and in listeners’ minds in equal measure. The Story of Light follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption.

Following up the 2009 live album Where The Wild Things Are, The Story of Light, is Vai’s! 16th solo effort.  In support of its release, Vai will begin a tour of North America on August 15th in Fort Lauderdale Florida, accompanied by his band—who are also featured on the new album: Dave Weiner (guitar), Jeremy Colson (drums), Philip Bynoe(bass),and Deborah Hensen (harp, vocals, keyboards). Joanne Shaw Taylor New Album Released: Almost Always Never. Plus UK Tour Dates

Following her acclaimed performance alongside Annie Lennox at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert in June, blues rock sensation Joanne Shaw Taylor will release a brand new studio album Almost Always Never on Monday September 17th
Released by Ruf Records, Almost Always Never is Joanne’s third studio album, it coincides with a 13-date nationwide tour of the UK, which kicks-off on October 11th at the Bristol Tunnels

Born and raised in the Black Country, Joanne was ‘discovered’ by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart as a 16 year old guitar prodigy. Through hard work and near-constant touring, she is now one of the hottest young names in British Blues. The UK tour will see her performing new tracks from Almost Always Never, alongside crowd favorites taken from her two previous albums - White Sugar (2009) and Diamonds in the Dirt (2010).

Joanne's UK dates are listed below :
~ Heartbreak Suicide~
Did you ever wonder what happened to the infamous Iron Curtain? Well behind it was hidden more metal - that is 'Heavy Metal'. The Soviet authorities while being very heavy handed about private enterprise had factions who were more sympathetic to Rock n' Roll and allowed it to develop under the radar in clubs and bars while keeping it away from the general public. It was only around the eighties that bands could freely produce and distribute records even then there was the spectre of censorship peering over the writers shoulders thankfully not as rigid as in the early years rather less chances to take a state sponsored holiday somewhere very remote. Todays Russian Rock is largely ignored by the European Union and the World in general partly no doubt to the domestic bands recording and performing mainly in Russian. That however could be about to change with the increasing number of festivals in Northern Europe the bands of the former Republic have a chance to meet a bigger and very Rock appreciative audience.
Our featured band today hail from St Petersburg in Russia one of the biggest cities in the country and home to the legendary Leningrad Rock Club. Russian Rock music is expanding from its soviet roots, pioneered by bands like Kino and DDT which to me are still more folk rock than mainstream western style hard rock. Heartbreak Suicide have broken from this mold and are very much more western influenced if you think Stooges, Marilyn Manson, Motley Crue you are getting very close to their playing style. This five piece band are going the Metal/Alternative route and we reckon this is a good choice with their abilities. They play tight with bags of drive "Risin'The Storm" would be right on the money at any hardrock festival this is a tune to pull the hardcore out of the beer tents. You can take 'Alibis' to the bank it is Rock Gold it has that tight G n'R feel to it with guitars multilayered without the guys falling over each other. That is playing that would fit seamlessly with the classic line up of 'Appetite for Destruction' era G n'R everybody in the band building into what is a great song. The band is still relatively young having formed up a year ago though they have history. Mark has known Ellis since they were kids together and he offered Ellis a place in his previous band but when (Mark) heard what Ellis had in mind they formed Heartbreak Suicide quickly recruiting Raff and Tails who were former band mates of Mark and Illya wanted in so that became the agreed lineup ( sorry if I went a bit Spinal Tap but thats the way it played out ). For those who like to know these things in the photo above the band are from left to right Raff-Guitar , Mark-Drums, Tails-Guitar, Iliya-Bass, Ellis-Vocals. The band are looking to expand their touring, Russia is a big place (understatement of the week) but they are looking to the European circuit I can't see any reason why they shouldn't be big with this kind of playing. More songs are coming and a promo video so if you are promoting in the area you ain't going to regret hearing these guys - lets rock shall we?
